What makes PCIT Unique?

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) can help! PCIT is a short-term, evidence-based behavior management treatment for young children with a variety of emotional and behavioral issues backed by more than 30 years of clinical research. The therapist teaches the caregiver play therapy techniques that are implemented in real time while the caregiver plays with their child. Treatment is done in two phases. The first phase improves child behavior by teaching caregivers play therapy skills that help the child manage their emotions, build frustration tolerance, and strengthens the caregiver-child relationship. The second phase of treatment involves teaching caregivers how to give instructions that young children are likely to follow and implementing a technique that allows caregivers to respond consistently and predictably to child non-compliance.

Customized therapy at home

Using TeleHealth technology, PCIT is now available across South Carolina. TeleHealth involves providing treatment over the internet using a secure, HIPAA compliant web-based platform that allows the caregiver and child to participate in therapy in the child’s natural home environment where behavior problems typically occur. Research supports the effectiveness of families receiving PCIT in their home environment, which can be even more effective than in an office. Generally, the therapist sees the child’s behavior issues at home sooner than in an office setting, which allows the intervention to occur immediately. TeleHealth can occur using a laptop, tablet, or smartphone and eliminates the need to travel to an office, which allows greater flexibility for appointment times. Appointments can be scheduled early in the morning, on a lunch break, or in the evening after school and work according to the caregiver’s preference and availability.
